What is rug hooking?
Rug hooking is a craft, like many, born out of necessity. First appearing in our country in the 1800's, early examples of rug hooking show our ancestors to be clever recyclers using whatever materials were on hand. Left over yarn, torn clothes and blankets were used for materials, burlap feedbags for backing, and a bent nail for a hooking tool. Their resourcefulness provided decorative and useful rugs for the home.
Today we are more fortunate. We have a vast selection of beautiful yarns, colors and materials. Here, at Barefoot Rugs we use a hand held punch needle to push the yarn through the backing. Making one loop after another it is simple, relaxing, and very creative!
We carry all the supplies you need to get started and offer a selection of kits. So come take a class and learn this exciting craft!
